How do I navigate the Archive?

The Archive provides a number of Category headings, which at the top level have been broken down into generic headings, namely the Audio Archive, Documents, Reunions, and User Galleries. Once you enter a category, a navigation path is shown just above and will look something like Home > User galleries > Brian Vincent. These are, in fact, links that allow you to hop quickly backwards to the most appropriate previous menu. “Home” is the top level of the Archive.

Slide show - How to view items quickly?

The fastest way to see what is in the photo archive is to run a slide show. Once you are within a photo gallery, click on the first photo to bring up an enlarged photo. Just below the navigation path (above the picture), top left hand side, you will see the slide show icon, it looks like this slideshow. Another useful option for quick navigation forwards or backwards is to use the left/right arrow buttons located further to the right and look like this left.gif and right

NOTE: Slide shows  or the left/right navigation buttons can be operated from an individual gallery (which gives the most selective control), or from the "latest additions" panel. If using the latter, then depending whether you are within a users gallery or the top level of the archive, the slide show will either show all photos submitted by that user, or all photos in the archive. The latter could be useful for checking for updates since you last toured the site.

What size Photos can I upload?

The size of Photo you can load is defined by the file size and the resolution of the picture

  • The file size must be less than 1024K (1 megabyte)
  • The resolution of the picture must be less than 2048 pixels in either dimension. You may have trouble uploading photos with this resolution. If you get an error message then try a resolution less than 900 in either direction.

How do I resize photos?

You must make sure that your photos have a resolution of less than 3072 pixels in either dimension. If your photo is larger than this then the Archive will upload it but then fail to store the file. So it will waste your time.

The preferred image size is 960 pixels in the longest dimension.

To resize the photo you need a photo application that will resize/resample the picture to a different resolution. You may well have this type of application either with your scanned or digital camera software.

infranview1If you don't have such a program, you can download a very to easy use programme called Irfanview. This program can handle almost all image types.

To download the program go to http://www.irfanview.com/ and look for the Download option. When you use the program there is a Resize/Resample option under the Image menu item.

Remember to select an Album

When uploading a file to the archive, remember to select an Album. You select in which Album to store the file, if you don't you will get an error message and no chance to correct the problem. You then have to upload the file again.
